Legend says that it was Masai tribesman that first noticed this stone some 30+ years ago after a fire caused by lightning burned areas in Tanzania - the country in Africa which gave the gem its name. The instant popularity of this transparent blue-to-violet gem was tied to its vivid colour, high clarity, and potential for large cut stones.
